Mainspring Energy raises $258M to power AI-driven data centers with flexible, fuel-adaptable generators.
With artificial intelligence fueling a power surge, data centers are looking more and more to new solutions for cheap and reliable energy. Mainspring Energy, a California startup, has raised $258 million in a Series F funding round to ramp up production of its linear generators—new systems that can supply data centers with more flexibility than conventional energy sources.
These engines are optimized to operate on multiple gaseous fuels, such as natural gas, ammonia, propane, and biogas, and provide an attractive solution to data centers seeking quick, scalable power. Compared to traditional turbines, the flameless reaction technology used by Mainspring has a reduced total cost of ownership, with a standard payback of three years. The company's generators can switch from fossil fuels to clean alternatives such as hydrogen seamlessly without any hardware modifications—providing both short-term dependability and long-term sustainability opportunities.
Mainspring is currently delivering tens of megawatts of power systems to U.S. data centers in 2025, as per CEO and co-founder Shannon Miller. Although the firm hasn't identified particular customers, it mentions growing interest from operators that are under increasing pressure from energy-demanding AI tools and scarce access to grid power. Texas is one state where grid operators anticipate demand of the equivalent of 30 new nuclear plants by 2030, demonstrating the urgency for decentralized energy options.
Guided by General Catalyst, the round also included Amazon's Climate Pledge Fund and Singapore's Temasek Holdings. Mainspring is now in the position of persuading data center operators—who are always nervous about downtime risk—to switch to its new technology.
With its ability to use flexible fuels, attractive price points, and investors behind it, Mainspring Energy is well on its way to becoming a central component in energizing the future of data centers in the rapidly electrifying, AI-filled world.
