The development highlights growing concerns around AI data center power demand and energy infrastructure challenges, as well as electricity grid management for hyperscale data centers, with technology companies expanding cloud and AI operations across the country.
PJM Interconnection is responsible for the largest power grid in the United States that covers 13 states and Washington, D.C., and it has recently faced increasing demands from technology firms and developers who want to build energy-intensive data centers.
These increasing demands lead to difficulties in maintaining the equilibrium of electricity supply and consumption. PJM provides services to almost 65 million people, and the rapid growth of server facilities increases pressure on available electricity sources.
This growing disparity has led to a substantial increase in PJM capacity prices, which are the costs paid to power companies in order to ensure electricity availability during peak demands. Voting by PJM members to promote projects aimed at obtaining more electricity sources and improving data center energy usage management took place.
Two possible options were suggested to be followed; according to the first one, the cost of additional electricity generation would be shared between the data centers. In the case of the second option, power usage by the data centers could be reduced or interrupted when extremely stressful conditions arise on the power grid.
Still, proposals concerning particular ways of reducing power usage have not been approved by members. However, one proposal concerning the future procurement process was promoted. The proposal states that the procurement process should begin in September 2026 with a view to obtaining additional electricity sources because of increasing demand.
