Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge to cut travel time from 2 hours to 1 minute in mountainous Guizhou
China is set to open the world's tallest bridge — Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge — during the second half of 2025. The bridge, which is in the southwest Chinese province of Guizhou, will be 2,051 feet above the river—947 feet higher than the Millau Viaduct in France, which currently holds the record.
The bridge crosses the deep and breathtaking Huajiang Grand Canyon, also known as "earth crack." When completed, it will reduce travel time through this difficult section by half. What took drivers two hours to travel will be accomplished in one minute.
The bridge is part of China's larger program to improve roads and transport, especially in still underdeveloped areas like Guizhou with poor roads. Guizhou is about 800 miles from Shenzhen and is currently the hub of bridge construction — nearly half of the world's top 100 tallest bridges are already there.
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is being built as a steel truss suspension bridge and will be 9,482 feet long. It began construction on January 18, 2022, and is currently 95% complete, engineers say. The steel parts of the bridge weigh about 22,000 tons — about the same as three Eiffel Towers.
The first bridge of this type to cross such a gargantuan canyon and travel both ways, explained Zhang Shenglin, Guizhou Highway Group's top engineer. Moreover, he went on, it will be the indicator of whether China can realize big infrastructure programs.
This marvelous bridge is, of course, a record-holder — but also one of the many important steps for transport over China's hilly landscape.
