Air India news: Tata-owned carrier receives first retrofitted wide-body jet after $400 million modernization programme begins progressing through fleet upgrades.
Air India has welcomed its debut refurbished Boeing 787-8 aircraft into service - an important step for the Airline's ambitious $400 Million fleet upgrade strategy. Air India news reports that the first wide body aircraft to join the carrier's fleet under this strategy is registered VT-ANT and completed a non-stop flight from San Bernardino, California to Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi on Monday evening, October 16th at 10pm.
The aircraft was completely remodeled at Boeing's modification facility located in Victorville, California, and received a full exterior repaint in Air India's new livery at AeroPro a certified aircraft paint facility. This retrofitting project includes thorough refurbishment of the entire twin aisles of its current fleet of ageing aircraft. This will help reduce the significant operational losses incurred on multiple international long-haul routes to the UK, Europe, USA, and Asia.
Air India initiated a fleet tech modernization initiative in December of 2022, which includes modernizing 27 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft and 13 Boeing 777 aircraft currently in their fleet. This retrofit has been heavily impacted by worldwide supply chain disruptions and political situations resulting in the first aircraft not scheduled to commence retrofitting until July of 2025 when that aircraft is received at the Victorville facility.
This extensive retrofit will include modern seating configurations in all classes of service, new in-flight entertainment systems, as well as a new premium economy class, which they state is India's only qualified premium economy class. Air India's fleet has been reduced to 26 787-8 aircraft following the loss of one aircraft in a crash near Ahmedabad in June 2025.
The retrofit is an important aspect of Air India's overall transformation plan following Air India's return to private ownership by Tata Group in January of 2022 after operating for several decades under government. The arrival of VT-ANT is a significant milestone in this major modernization project and additional aircraft will arrive for service as part of the modernization continues throughout the remaining fleet.
Business Honor is of the view that Air India's refurbished Boeing 787-8 arrival represents a strategic operational transformation initiative.
