XL8 Unveils AI-Powered Real-Time Translation for Live Broadcast Captions

Breaking language barriers with AI-driven live translation for seamless multilingual accessibility.

XL8, a pioneering AI-powered translation software company, has launched commercially its real-time translation solution, rendering English subtitles into Spanish for live streams. This innovation, in collaboration with the Public Media Venture Group (PMVG), is the first-ever application of AI-powered real-time translation in U.S. public broadcasting. The company will be demonstrating its innovation at the NAB Show 2025 in April.

The system was initially integrated into a Cookeville, Tennessee, TV station, where it smoothly translated and provided live captions to Spanish-speaking viewers. Utilizing ATSC 3.0-based NextGen TV, XL8 provides seamless integration with current production and transmission workflows. Viewers with ATSC 3.0 TVs are now able to change captions to Spanish via TV settings, without the need for separate equipment.

XL8's innovative AI system captures live English subtitles, automatically translates them into Spanish, and places them back in the broadcast feed. Such incorporation opens up language access, improving inclusivity of content for diverse, multilingual viewers. The project was worked on jointly with DigiCAP, the Korea Radio Promotion Association (RAPA), and PBS member station WCTE, strengthening XL8's role as an AI translation software market leader.

With more Spanish-speaking households in the U.S., real-time AI translation breaks down language barriers on public media. WCTE CEO Avery Hutchins noted the significance of this technology, adding, "This technology allows Spanish-speaking viewers to watch content more conveniently, promoting inclusivity and engagement."

XL8 CEO Tim Jung emphasized the significance of the project: "This is more than a technology upgrade—it's a move toward breaking down language barriers in live broadcast."

XL8 will unveil its real-time translation software at NAB Show 2025, highlighting its promise to revolutionize media accessibility across the globe.
