Sequans introduces advanced 5G eRedCap chips to optimize IoT connectivity and performance.
The first new chip is called Calliope 3, which builds on the success of the leading the way Calliope 2 Cat 1bis. By adding 5G NR eRedCap to LTE Cat 1bis, it improves endurance, data throughput, and connectivity stability. The Calliope product line is ideal for Internet of Things applications that require a stable and reasonably priced connection, such as wearables, security devices, and fleet management.
The second new chip, Monarch 3, enhances the best-in-class LTE-M/NB-IoT Monarch 2 by adding 5G NR eRedCap to LTE-M. Monarch 3 provides exceptional power efficiency and longevity for a variety of cellular LPWA applications. The Monarch product line was developed to satisfy the expanding demands of the healthcare, smart metering, and asset tracking industries.
There is now a clear roadmap for Calliope 2 (LTE Cat 1bis) and Monarch 2 (LTE-M/NB-IoT) users to manage their transition to 5G NR eRedCap. The software and footprint of the Calliope 3 and Monarch 3 modules will be compatible with those of the Calliope 2 and Monarch 2 modules. In 2026, Sequans intends to begin offering samples to clients.
Georges Karam, CEO of Sequans, expressed that the company’s new chips, which support 5G eRedCap and offer enhanced performance, reflect Sequans' commitment to innovation and their dedication to delivering the most advanced and efficient cellular connectivity tailored to meet the specific IoT needs of their customers.
Dan Shey, VP at ABI Research, highlighted the importance of 5G eRedCap semiconductors designed specifically for the IoT as network operators prepare to transition from 4G to 5G. He highlighted that these semiconductors are crucial for achieving the cost and power efficiency required for IoT applications. Shey also pointed out that providing products that facilitate a smooth shift from 4G to 5G eRedCap is vital for IoT application designers to create future-proof solutions.
