Immigrants in El Cajon use an app to monitor ICE operations and avoid confrontations.
More immigrants are taking proactive steps to safeguard themselves as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations increase nationwide. A vital tool for being educated and attentive, a rising number of neighbors in El Cajon, California, have begun utilizing a mobile app that notifies them of nearby ICE operations. ICE has arrested over 40,000 immigrants since Donald Trump took office again on January 20, targeting both those with criminal histories and those with no past convictions. This software seeks to inform users about ICE activities in their region, providing actual updates to help users avoid potential confrontations as reports of irregular detentions rise.
Speaking with ABC News, Joanna Benavidez, one of the app’s developers, explained that the tool includes a risk zone map based on user-submitted reports, which detail the time and location of recent ICE raids. These reports show a pattern where ICE operations typically occur around 11:00 a.m. (local time), with agents generally avoiding early mornings. The app only collects publicly available data with the aim of enhancing community safety.
