GM and ChargePoint partner to deploy 500 ultra-fast EV chargers, supporting electric vehicle adoption nationwide.
General Motors (GM) and electric vehicle (EV) charging provider ChargePoint have announced a major partnership to deploy 500 ultra-fast EV chargers across the United States by the end of 2025. The collaboration aims to expand the nation’s EV infrastructure, making fast and convenient charging accessible for electric vehicle owners.
The new charging stations will be equipped with ChargePoint's state-of-the-art "Omni Port" chargers, which automatically dispense both Combined Charging System (CCS) and North American Charging Standard (NACS) connectors without an adapter. These chargers will provide ultra-fast charging speeds of up to 500 kilowatts, allowing EVs to gain hundreds of miles of range in just 15 minutes, making long-distance travel more feasible for EV owners.
The charging stations will be branded under GM's subsidiary, GM Energy, and the companies plan to ensure public access by 2025. This partnership falls in line with GM's continued efforts toward strengthening the adoption of EVs and supporting the shift toward clean energy. According to ChargePoint's CEO, Rick Wilmer, "Our cities need collaboration, a lot of collaboration, to build out the kind of robust infrastructure electric mobility requires.".
The new initiative would complement this process as GM expands its charging networks through partnerships such as EVgo. GM, along with its partner EVgo, is trying to install as many as 2,850 DC fast stalls across major US cities to promote electric vehicle purchases and enhance owners' charging experiences.
This is part of a larger effort by GM and other automakers, including BMW, Toyota, and Honda, through the Ionna EV charging joint venture. It aims to deploy at least 30,000 charging ports in North America by 2030, shared by the participating automakers, thereby improving access to fast and reliable EV charging.
