Airtel becomes the first private telecom operator to launch mobile services along Jammu & Kashmir's border regions.
In a landmark achievement, Bharti Airtel, led by billionaire Sunil Mittal, has become the first private telecom provider to offer mobile services in some of the most remote and strategically important areas of Jammu and Kashmir. The telecom giant has deployed 15 mobile towers across seven border villages in the Kupwara, Baramulla, and Bandipora districts, directly challenging Reliance Jio, the current market leader.
The newly connected villages in the Keran, Machhal, Tangdhar, Gurez, and Uri valley regions will now enjoy telecom services for the first time. The development assumes importance since these areas are sensitive because of their closeness to the Line of Control (LoC), and the connectivity is likely to help both local residents and the Indian Army stationed in the region.
This connectivity has only been brought to these out-of-bounds areas thanks to airtel, partnering with the Indian army to ensure both civilian and military communications infrastructure are further developed. This is yet another stride for Airtel that follows the successful endeavors it executed in other challenging locations, like the Galwan River, and the very northern military outpost, Daulat Beg Oldie.
Telecom market in India is extremely competitive. The number of subscribers to Jio's network leads the way; however, the recent data shows that Airtel has gained some market share from Jio, further intensifying the competition between the two giants in the market.
This move of Sunil Mittal into the expansion of Airtel's network into such remote areas shows his dedication not only to providing connectivity but also to enhancing the communication of national security. The company is looking to expand its reach in underdeveloped regions, which would further strengthen its position in the competitive Indian telecom market.
