BioWare's latest RPG misses major nominations despite high expectations, with only one nod for accessibility.
While The Game Awards 2024 delivered a fairly predictable list of nominees, one glaring omission has left fans and industry observers stunned: Dragon Age: The Veilguard—the much-anticipated RPG from BioWare—has been largely overlooked in key categories. Despite being a narrative-driven blockbuster in the famous Dragon Age series, the game secured just one nomination: Innovation in Accessibility.
This meager recognition comes as a surprise, especially considering the game's high-profile release and BioWare's track record with The Game Awards. Dragon Age: Inquisition is the previous game in the series that took Game of the Year in 2014, setting pretty high expectations for its successor. Nevertheless, The Veilguard was overlooked in categories where it may have been expected to really stand out: Best Narrative and Best Performance, two categories where BioWare's excellent writing and character development are always met with praise. It was overlooked for Best Role-Playing Game, too, which features stiff competition, including Metaphor: ReFantazio, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. While mixed reception possibly helped to keep The Veilguard out of Game of the Year consideration—the game has a current Metacritic rating of 82—its omission from more genre-specific categories, like Best RPG or Best Narrative, just seems like a missed opportunity for a title many thought would be a frontrunner.
Other notable snubs include EA Sports College Football 25 for not making it into the final list in the category of Sports/Racing Game, and Sim/Strategy Game simply left out such popular indie titles as Satisfactory and Tactical Breach Wizards.
Despite these omissions, there were still surprises among the nominees, with Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 earning four nominations—including Game of the Year—and Black Myth: Wukong making an unexpected appearance in the Game of the Year list.
For Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the lack of broader recognition at The Game Awards marks a disappointment for BioWare and its fans, as the studio had hoped to see its decade-long development effort rewarded on the biggest stage of the gaming industry.
