GTA 6 preorders spark major gaming community backlash over pricing, digital distribution, and missing physical discs.

Grand Theft Auto VI will finally be released for pre-order after years of waiting, and with this announcement comes a lot of controversy. Rockstar Games announced the game would come out on November 19, 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, with a standard edition of $79.99 and an Ultimate Edition of $99.99, which will include extra in-game items like vehicles/weapons and two exclusive side missions. All those who pre-order the game before November 20 will receive the Vintage Vice City Pack for free, which is a set of cosmetic items that pay tribute to the Vice City setting from the game's previous iterations.
Most of the uproar has been regarding Rockstar's decision not to create physical disc copies of the game at launch, as the disc would be replaced by a code given inside a box. This change has sparked a lot of backlash on social media with players complaining that by removing physical media they are essentially giving up their ownership rights, as well as not being able to play the game in the future. "The whole point of owning a physical copy of the game is that it's yours," tweeted one user on X.
"Lend it, shelf it, sell it, hand it to your kid in twenty years." Critics argue that without a physical disc, players lose the ability to resell, trade, or preserve their copy once Rockstar's servers eventually shut down. One vocal commenter equated the physical edition to "an empty box with homework inside," highlighting the perceived emptiness of receiving only a code rather than tangible media.
Another frustrated fan declared that Rockstar had "killed the community that forms around video games just to make a few bucks." The feelings reflected in this situation demonstrate the general unease expressed by the community regarding the direction gaming is taking away from physical media and more towards entirely digital distribution methods.
However, not every gamer feels the same. Multiple gamers feel that the trend of digital distribution has already established itself as the norm within the industry as approximately 90% of video game sales are taking place digitally. Others sounded excited for the launch of the new game regardless of what format it will be available on, with one user posting that they would still buy GTA 6 if it cost $500. Due to the increasing number of complaints regarding this issue, Rockstar Games has now confirmed that they will be producing physical copies of the game at some point in the "next few months". According to sources in the industry, they are stated to be available sometime in December.
Business Honor is of the view that Rockstar Games' shift to digital-only distribution represents a strategic pivot toward maximizing profit margins.
