Toho acquires Oscar-winning animation studio GKIDS to expand global animation presence.

Japanese entertainment giant Toho has officially acquired the Oscar-winning animation studio GKIDS, solidifying its strategic move to expand its global animation operations. The deal, announced on Tuesday, grants Toho access to an established North American distributor and sales operation through GKIDS, which has earned a stellar reputation in the animation world since its founding in 2008.

GKIDS has earned a reputation for producing and distributing artist-driven animated films; among its top-shelf achievements have been introducing the acclaimed work of Song of the Sea, The Breadwinner, and Wolfwalkers to North America, as well as stewarding the beloved catalog of Studio Ghibli. Earlier this year, GKIDS won the Oscar with 13 nominations for Best Animated Feature with The Boy and the Heron, a film by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Best known for its titles like Godzilla and popular anime like My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen, Toho has been collaborating with GKIDS on major releases, including Weathering With You and Spirited Away: Live on Stage. This deal will help the Japanese company strengthen its presence outside of Japan and enhance its influence on the global animated film market.

"Toho's partnership with GKIDS aligns perfectly with our own goals and strategic vision," said Hiro Matsuoka, president and CEO of Toho. "This acquisition accelerates our ambition to prioritize animation and develop international markets while bringing exceptional Japanese and animated content to audiences worldwide."

GKIDS will continue to operate as an independent company, with founder Eric Beckman as its CEO and Dave Jesteadt as president. The two executives insisted that studio operations will remain unchanged, but now with the added advantage of a parent company that is almost legendary in the territory.
