State celebrates major lottery win after nearly a decade without a jackpot winner.

A Georgia Powerball player won an estimated $478 million on Tuesday. That big-ticket prize snapped the state's nearly eight-year streak without a jackpot winner. The winning numbers drawn were 2, 15, 27, 29, 39, and the red Powerball 20. This enormous win means the lucky player has the option of receiving the full amount spread over 29 years or a cash payout of about $230.6 million.

It was after a two-month calendar in Powerball jackpot wins when this triumph came. The last jackpot win was $44.3 million awarded in California on August 2024. Prior to that, Georgia had only brought up four jackpot winners since it first had one 14 years ago-with the newest one being by William and Heather ten Broeke for $246 million back in 2016.

Lottery officials remind players that generally they have 180 days to make a claim for their prizes. For fans of the game, Powerball remains a focal point, as it has a 1 in 292,201,338 shot at winning the grand prize. The winnings will go to public education and the other programs in the state, which could indicate a greater level of interest for local games down the road.

In fact, the Georgia Lottery Corporation emphasizes responsible gaming by indicating that the lottery is for entertainment purposes only. The recent landmark win marks a remarkable moment in the state's lottery history.
