Jay Johnston, Capitol riot, sentencing, federal prison, Hollywood

Actor faces consequences for actions during January 6th events at the U.S. Capitol.

Comedian Jay Johnston has been sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison for his role in the January 6, 2021, storming of the Capitol. The 56-year-old Johnston, who has had supporting roles in popular TV comedies such as Bob's Burgers and Arrested Development, pleaded guilty in July to a felony count of interfering with law enforcement officers who were trying to prevent a mob from forcing its way into the Capitol.

In passing judgment, Judge Carl Nichols mentioned that Johnston's involvement is very disturbing for one with a huge career in Hollywood. For this, some evidence was proffered which included footage from the CCTV and body cameras in which Johnston, according to the prosecution, was observed in the course of a group assault against police officers, and the person was even observed brandishing a police riot shield taken from another officer during the commotion. During the trial, Johnston declared his actions to be unacceptable, how bad his role had been in the actions of the crowd.

The prosecutors, however, had a sterner sentence in mind, given that Johnston had never been apologetic regarding the attack and had shown to prove himself as aware of the violent act on that particular day. Evidence against him was messages he'd written to friends and family which made him feel that media was exaggerating the event.

Johnston's defense attorney, Stanley Woodward, contended that the actor had been unfairly targeted due to his celebrity status. Woodward claimed that Johnston has since faced significant professional repercussions, stating he has effectively been blacklisted from Hollywood and has resorted to working as a handyman for the past two years.

The case against Johnston is part of a larger series of legal proceedings related to the Capitol riots, with nearly 1,500 individuals charged to date. As the U.S. continues to address the ramifications of the January 6 events, Johnston’s sentencing serves as a notable example of the consequences for those involved.
