Enhanced in-flight maps set to improve travel experiences for visually impaired passengers.
Delta Air Lines has announced the rollout of a new, more accessible flight map for its in-flight entertainment systems, impacting most of its 165,000 seatback screens. This upgrade aims to enhance the travel experience for all passengers, particularly those with visual impairments. Delta a pioneering member of the SkyTeam Alliance, which already has the highest number of seatback screens in the market and this latest enhancement underlines its commitment to accessibility.
The airline says 80 percent of its passengers use its in-flight entertainment systems monthly. More than others, the most used feature is the flight map. Nearly 45 percent of travelers use the map in their flight with some passengers choosing to use it exclusively in a trend that has been referred to as "rawdogging" - they minimize all distractions.
Delta's new flight map is equipped with several accessibility features, including high-contrast visuals, which will decrease eye strain and increase the visibility of the map. The redesign also includes a color-blind palette with patterns and textures in addition to colors that help differentiate between the different elements of the map. All text and icons are enlarged for easy reading, and information is presented more clearly by emphasizing countries, borders, and major cities.
The airline has closely collaborated with its Advisory Board on Disability in the design process to obtain feedback, ensuring the new design not only met the needs of visually impaired passengers but improved the experience for all passengers. In addition, audio updates of flight details will be read aloud to support those passengers who may require this functionality.
According to Thomas Panek, Advisory Board on Disability of Delta head, this new map makes travel much easier for blind and partially sighted people and the individual described himself as being very excited to get it. Delta’s commitment to inclusive design also extends to its existing features, including 100% closed captioning on movies and a 40% increase in audio descriptive content.
With these enhancements, Delta Air Lines continues to set a standard for inclusive travel experiences, ensuring every passenger feels valued and connected during their journey.
