Red Hat's OpenShift Drives Nationwide's Integration Platform for Enhanced Member Engagement
Red Hat, the global leader in open source solutions, has joined forces with Nationwide Building Society to transform its digital customer experience. The collaboration focuses on building and scaling Nationwide’s new Business Integration Platform (BIP) using Red Hat OpenShift, a top hybrid cloud application platform powered by Kubernetes. This partnership aims to boost service availability to an impressive 99.999% and accelerate deployment of upgrades and new features.
Nationwide Building Society, the world's largest building society with over 17 million customers, sought to enhance its digital capabilities to meet growing customer demands. With 16 million members holding current accounts, mortgages, or savings products, Nationwide needed a robust, event-driven integration platform to efficiently manage its system architecture, scale as needed, and integrate with modern cloud-native applications.
Red Hat’s involvement began with the development of Speed Layer, a cloud-based automation platform utilizing Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Designed to provide real-time data and responsive event management, Speed Layer showcased resilience and scalability, proving crucial for Nationwide’s broader integration goals. With Red Hat Consulting’s expertise, Nationwide built the BIP on Red Hat OpenShift, which now underpins strategic operations across the organization.
The new platform leverages open source technologies like Kafka for distributed event storage and MongoDB for database management, ensuring continuous service access even during outages. Red Hat OpenShift’s Kubernetes-based event-driven autoscaling (KEDA) efficiently processes over 100,000 data items per second, enhancing the responsiveness of Nationwide’s Banking App. Additionally, Red Hat OpenShift’s built-in security features ensure network and container isolation, offering consistent protection across environments.
