Swisscom Broadcast and Nokia Launch Nationwide Drone Network in Switzerland

Swiss public safety agencies can request drone support through Swisscom Broadcast, similar to a ride-sharing service

Swisscom Broadcast and Nokia have teamed up to roll out a Drones-as-a-Service network that spans the entire country. The initiative will see the installation of 300 Nokia Drone-in-a-Box units, aimed at enhancing emergency response, infrastructure inspection, and perimeter protection. This is Nokia's second nationwide drone network establishment, coming off a similar Belgian project.

The collaboration is set to bolster Switzerland's public safety and Industry 4.0 initiatives. The drones, capable of beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations, will improve first responders' situational awareness by gathering critical information within minutes of an emergency. Swiss public safety agencies can request drone support through Swisscom Broadcast, similar to a ride-sharing service. The network will also contribute to worker safety by handling hazardous tasks such as inspecting tall or hard-to-reach infrastructure, reducing the need for personnel to operate in dangerous conditions. The mission-critical industrial edge computing (MXIE) platform from Nokia, which also incorporates asset detection and 3D mapping, will be utilized by the drones.

This initiative is expected to enhance drone operations at scale across Switzerland, integrating Nokia’s cutting-edge technology with Swisscom’s service expertise. The turnkey solution includes drones, docking stations, ground control, and interfaces for third-party integrations, ensuring a comprehensive approach to drone-based services in the industrial and public safety sectors. By advancing BVLOS operations and expanding 3GPP technologies, Swisscom Broadcast and Nokia are positioning Switzerland at the forefront of drone innovation and safety.
