A24's latest horror comedy, Y2K, dives into the chaos of the turn of the millennium, reimagining what could have happened if the infamous Y2K bug had lived up to its doomsday hype. Set on New Year’s Eve of 1999, the film follows a group of teenagers, whose celebrations take a deadly turn as outdated technology comes to life, threatening their survival in a world where old-school computers and bloodthirsty Tamagotchis become their worst nightmares.
The film is the brainchild of Kyle Mooney, an alum of Saturday Night Live known for his offbeat humor. Mooney, who previously directed the cult hit Brigsby Bear, brings his signature blend of comedy and surrealism to Y2K, creating a unique cinematic experience that’s part Can’t Hardly Wait, part apocalyptic horror in the vein of This is the End. The movie features a cast of relatively unknown teenage actors, adding authenticity to the 1990s setting, while adult roles are filled by Tim Heidecker, Alicia Silverstone, and Mooney himself.
