Graphite One and Lucid Motors collaboration aims to build a comprehensive U.S. supply chain for advanced graphite and support the future of American electric vehicles.
Graphite One and Lucid Motors have announced a groundbreaking partnership to create a domestic supply chain for advanced graphite, a crucial component for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. This initiative follows a July 25 briefing at the U.S. Capitol and will establish a supply chain stretching from Alaska to Ohio to Arizona.
Currently, the U.S. relies entirely on imports for its anode active material (AAM), which includes both synthetic and natural graphite. Doug Smith, executive chairman of Graphite One, highlighted the importance of this new supply chain, noting that it will be centered around the Graphite Creek deposit in Alaska. This deposit is recognized as the largest in the U.S. and one of the largest in the world. The project includes plans for a manufacturing plant in Warren, Ohio, which will produce advanced graphite materials and battery anode materials.
Lucid Motors’ EVs will be the final link in this supply chain, with their vehicles being manufactured in Casa Grande, Arizona. According to the company’s 2022 Pre-Feasibility Study, graphite from the Seward Peninsula Graphite Creek Property will be processed into concentrate and then converted into AAM and other products at the Ohio facility. This plant will also include a recycling center to reclaim graphite and other battery materials.
The Feasibility Study for this project is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. Following that, Graphite One will seek funding and begin the mine permitting process, with construction potentially starting soon after.
