Ethio Telecom makes significant strides towards bridging Ethiopia’s digital divide, bringing mobile connectivity to 100 remote areas
In a transformative move towards achieving Digital Ethiopia, Ethio Telecom has successfully extended mobile connectivity to 100 previously unconnected rural areas, bringing essential telecom services to over 903,000 residents across 305 kebeles. This milestone marks a significant leap in the company’s mission to narrow the digital inclusion gap and bolster the growth of Ethiopia's digital economy.
The newly launched mobile sites are a testament to Ethio Telecom's commitment to enhancing rural connectivity. As of March 2024, the company pledged to establish 500 rural mobile sites by the end of the year, and they are well on their way with 100 sites already operational. These eco-friendly, solar-powered solutions provide 2G and 3G connectivity, with the capacity to be upgraded to 4G, ensuring that even the most remote areas are equipped with scalable, sustainable technology.
The impact of this initiative on rural communities is profound. Ethio Telecom’s efforts are expected to drastically reduce the distances—up to 20 kilometers—that residents previously had to travel to access basic telecom services. Beyond just communication, this connectivity is set to revolutionize access to vital digital services in education, healthcare, and finance, creating new opportunities for economic and social development in these underserved areas.
Despite the challenges posed by difficult terrain and scattered settlements, Ethio Telecom’s project has been a success, largely due to the strong support from local communities. The company has emphasized the importance of collaboration with stakeholders to further expand connectivity across the country.
