New Collaboration to Advance Sustainable, High-Durability Data Solutions for Cutting-Edge Scientific Research
Cerabyte, a trailblazer in ceramic-based data storage technology, has announced its official membership in CERN openlab, a premier public-private partnership designed to accelerate computing for scientific research. This collaboration promises to enhance the development of innovative, secure, and sustainable data storage solutions tailored for CERN’s extensive research needs.
Cerabyte’s groundbreaking technology draws inspiration from ancient Babylonian data storage methods, specifically the cuneiform tablets, to create ceramic-based media capable of preserving data for virtually eternity. This approach addresses pressing challenges in data storage, including scaling, energy consumption, and cost-effectiveness.
The need for efficient long-term data storage solutions is growing as the amount of data retained continues to increase. Cerabyte's technology aims to tackle these challenges by minimizing electronic waste and reducing the energy demands of data centers globally. The company’s innovative approach utilizes a Digital Mirror Device to write data matrices onto a durable ceramic medium, demonstrating high performance in both writing and reading data. A petabyte-scale system is projected, potentially becoming available for use at CERN by 2025/26.
With this new partnership, Cerabyte and CERN openlab are set to push the boundaries of data storage technology, making significant strides toward more sustainable and resilient solutions for the scientific community.
