This risk-off sentiment effected cryptocurrencies particularly hard due to their unpredictable nature
Bitcoin tumbled to a more than five-month low on Monday, falling 12% to $51,995. This sharp decline marked its weakest level since late February, erasing gains from a rally initiated by the launch of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds in March. The cryptocurrency's steep drop mirrored a broader slump in financial markets as fears of a U.S. economic slowdown intensified risk aversion.
The world's largest digital currency's decline is in line with major losses in equity markets. Wall Street indexes dropped on Friday, and Asian markets followed suit, with Japanese stocks entering bear market just weeks after hitting record highs. This risk-off sentiment effected cryptocurrencies particularly hard due to their unpredictable nature. In spite of having high expectations of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve, Bitcoin’s collapse continued, with traders choosing more safe assets like the Japanese yen and gold. Additionally, recent U.S. government moves involving about $2 billion worth of tokens and declining trading volumes in crypto derivatives further pressured the market.
Broader crypto markets also suffered, with Ether sliding 21.5% to $2,2390.13, its lowest since December. XRP, SOL, and ADA all fell over 17%, while meme tokens DOGE and SHIB lost approximately 18% each. Uncertainty over U.S. regulatory developments continues to weigh heavily on the sector
