AWS Narrows Its Cloud Service Portfolio

In a strategic shift, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the closure of several cloud services to new customers, signaling a move to streamline its offerings.

In a surprising move, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has restricted new customer access to a selection of its cloud services. This decision, made public in late July, has been implemented immediately. The affected services include AWS Cloud9, a cloud-based integrated development environment (IDE), and AWS CodeCommit, a private Git repository service. Additionally, AWS has closed new customer access to Amazon S3 Select, Amazon S3 Glacier Select, Amazon CloudSearch, Amazon Forecast, and AWS Data Pipeline.

Jeff Barr, AWS’s Chief Evangelist, addressed the decision in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on July 30. "After considerable deliberation, we decided to discontinue new access to a few services, including AWS CodeCommit," Barr stated. "Although we are no longer onboarding new customers to these services, there are no plans to alter the current features or the high level of security and reliability you enjoy. We are committed to supporting transitions to other AWS or third-party solutions that may better suit your evolving needs. Your feedback is crucial, and we are always listening."

For customers currently using AWS CodeCommit, the company recommends transitioning Git repositories to alternative providers through methods such as cloning or mirroring specific branches. AWS Cloud9 users are encouraged to migrate to AWS IDE Toolkits and AWS CloudShell, which offer similar functionality with integration into other AWS services.
