Argentina and U.S. to Boost Metals Mining

New agreement aims to strengthen supply chains for critical minerals, reducing reliance on China.

Argentina is set to sign a significant agreement with the United States to attract investment and enhance trade in critical-minerals mining, according to a U.S. State Department official. The deal, which is part of a broader U.S. initiative to bolster supply chains for metals used in electric vehicle batteries and solar panels, marks a strategic move to decrease dependence on China.

The agreement will be formalized during U.S. Under Secretary of State Jose Fernandez's visit to Argentina this week, under the administration of President Javier Milei. Argentina, known for its vast copper and lithium reserves, has only scratched the surface of its resource potential. This partnership is poised to unlock greater opportunities for exploration and development.

By joining forces with the U.S., Argentina will gain streamlined access to the Minerals Security Partnership, a U.S.-led coalition of 14 countries and the European Union. This partnership not only connects foreign investors with mining projects but also emphasizes strict adherence to environmental standards. Fernandez highlighted that the agreement would enable Argentina to present its investment opportunities to multiple countries simultaneously, fostering economic growth and benefiting local communities.

While this deal represents a significant step forward, challenges remain. Despite Argentina’s alignment with Washington, shifting its economic focus away from China—its largest trading partner after Brazil—will not be easy. Additionally, Argentina still faces hurdles in qualifying for incentives under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, as it lacks a free-trade agreement with the U.S.

The State Department has encouraged participation in a Minerals Security Partnership forum in Buenos Aires on August 23, emphasizing Argentina’s potential as a leader in lithium and copper development across multiple provinces.
