Nebius aims to compete with tech giants like Microsoft and Google in terms of AI capabilities
The co-founder of Yandex, Arkady Volozh, heads Nebius Group, an AI infrastructure company in Europe, leveraging former Yandex staff. Following Yandex’s exit from Russia, Nebius is focused on a specialized cloud platform for training AI models. Followed by Volozh’s criticism of Russia’s actions in Ukraine, he aims to reconstruct Yandex’s global ambitions, which have been hampered by geopolitical conflict.
Nebius, along with 1,300 former Yandex engineers, work together with major AI startups in Europe with the aim of developing high-performance technology infrastructure. The sale of the $5.4 billion assets of Yandex’s Russian parent facilitated the launch of Nebius, which is now independent and has no ties to Russia. Nebius aims to compete with tech giants like Microsoft and Google in terms of AI capabilities and boasts Europe’s most powerful supercomputer in its Finnish data center. Now in Israel, Volozh is navigating the sanctions but is hopeful having regained control of Nebius. The company retains Yandex’s international businesses in data, education, and autonomous vehicles and is keeping up with the rapid pace of technological advancement. With $2.5 billion in revenue from the sale of Yandex, Nebius plans to re-list Nasdaq with the aim of substantial growth and investor interest. Volozh sees Nebius as a platform for future capital investments, envisioning an unprecedented European technological boom.
The move highlights Volozh’s commitment to reshaping Yandex’s legacy amid geopolitical turmoil, establishing Nebius as an important player in Europe’s rapidly evolving AI landscape.
