Collins Aerospace Onboard Wheelchair Accommodation

Collins Aerospace will demonstrate its innovative seating solution at the Aircraft Interiors Exhibition

Next week, Collins Aerospace, an RTX business, will introduce a groundbreaking cabin solution for onboard wheelchair accommodation at the annual Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany. This innovation is designed to enhance the inflight experience for passengers with reduced mobility (PRM) by offering a level of comfort and dignity comparable to that of able-bodied passengers. The new wheelchair seating solution from Collins Aerospace is compatible with most WC19 and ISO 7176-19 transport-certified powered wheelchair devices. It features a restraint system installed at the front of narrow body aircraft, allowing wheelchair users to remain in their wheelchairs throughout the flight. This setup not only simplifies boarding and deplaning but also reduces the risk of personal injury and the mishandling of wheelchairs during check-in, handling, and stowage processes.

Recent tests conducted by the National Institute of Aviation Research (NIAR) revealed that the boarding process using the Collins solution is comparable to the average ground transportation experience. This harmonization ensures a seamless travel experience across different modes of transport. An integrated restraint system and seat belt attachments that secure the wheelchair and the passenger are required for the installation of the Collins solution. The restraint system is designed to be stowed when not in use, utilizing otherwise unused space and maintaining the aircraft's existing cabin density without requiring seat removal or modifications.

Collins Aerospace will demonstrate its innovative seating solution at the Aircraft Interiors Exhibition from May 28-30, showcasing how it integrates seamlessly into current aircraft designs while significantly improving the travel experience for passengers with reduced mobility.
