Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to around 60,000 employees as the technology giant looks to control costs and support its expanding artificial intelligence investments. This represents more than one-fourth of its total number of employees, according to Reuters. The Microsoft employee buyout programme 2026 comes as the company works to manage rising expenses linked to its AI expansion.

Eligible employees in participating teams can take advantage of the opportunity in Canada, India, the United Kingdom and the United States if they are at level 70 or below. Teams working in areas such as AI experiences, Copilot, finance, human resources, Xbox and Windows + Devices have been listed as eligible for the scheme, a source told Reuters. The Microsoft workforce reduction strategy reflects the company's efforts to adjust staffing needs while continuing to invest in AI.

Microsoft Chief People Officer Amy Coleman explained the purpose of the programme in a staff memo.

“This offer gives eligible employees who may be considering a future outside the company a new choice to make that transition now with support,” Coleman said. She added that the programme would also give participating organisations another way to adjust their workforce to changing needs.

This move follows Microsoft's heavy investment in its AI capabilities through data centres and specialised chips. According to Reuters, Microsoft has projected capital expenditure of $175 billion for the 2026 calendar year. This has raised concerns among investors about whether the returns will justify the high costs.

As per Microsoft's annual filing, it had a total of 223,000 full-time employees worldwide as of June 30, 2026. Prior to this, Microsoft had offered a voluntary retirement option to about 7% of its US-based workforce, amounting to about 9,000 employees.

In addition, Microsoft recently cut 4,800 jobs owing to structural changes within the Xbox video game division, which included the decision to sell off up to five studios. This programme is time-limited and will draw on the experience of the previous voluntary retirement programme. Microsoft said eligible employees will receive further information shortly after the announcement.

The company had its first quarter earnings report scheduled for after market hours Wednesday. This latest program reflects the financial challenges faced by large technology companies due to their efforts in enhancing AI functionality amid labor expenses. Business Honor observes that Microsoft’s buyout programme highlights the challenge of balancing rising AI investments with operating costs while maintaining financial performance.
