Apple CEO John Ternus takes charge on September 1, facing pressure to strengthen Apple AI while protecting the hardware and supply chain built under Tim Cook.

John Ternus takes over as Apple CEO on September 1, stepping into the job with an immediate challenge: keep Apple’s powerful hardware business growing while closing ground in artificial intelligence.
The timing leaves little room for a quiet transition. Apple’s September 9 event is expected to feature a major product lineup, including its first foldable iPhone and a new smart display. Ternus has played a key role in developing several of these products as Apple’s hardware chief.
Can the engineer who shaped Apple’s devices now reshape its AI strategy?
Ternus, 51, joined Apple in 2001 and raised through its hardware ranks. He eventually took responsibility for the engineering behind the iPhone, iPad, AirPods and other major products.
His promotion marks a clear change in style. Tim Cook built his reputation around operations, supply chains and global business relationships. Ternus comes from engineering and product development.
Cook, who ends a 15-year run as CEO, will become Apple’s executive chairman. He is expected to remain involved in government and policy matters, an area where his experience could prove valuable.
China, Trump and a Difficult Inheritance
The transition also comes with geopolitical pressure. Apple still depends heavily on China for manufacturing and remains deeply tied to the Chinese consumer market. Cook had gradually shifted some production to India and Vietnam, but the move has not removed China from Apple’s supply chain.
Washington’s pressure adds another complication, with demands for more iPhone manufacturing in the United States.
Can Ternus manage Apple’s global politics as effectively as he managed its hardware?
AI may prove an even bigger test. Apple has faced criticism for trailing rivals in artificial intelligence, while its competitors push aggressively into generative AI and AI-powered products.
Ternus is expected to lean on senior executives including COO Sabih Khan, CFO Kevan Parekh and services chief Eddy Cue as he takes on responsibilities beyond engineering.
Was Ternus chosen to lead Apple into AI or to double down on what Apple already does best?
His first major public test will arrive within days of taking charge. If the foldable iPhone launches as expected, Ternus will immediately become the face of one of Apple’s biggest hardware changes in years.
But hardware alone may not define his tenure. Business Honor examines that The real measure will be whether the new Apple CEO can push Apple deeper into AI without weakening the product discipline, global supply chain and customer loyalty that Tim Cook leaves behind.
