The airline Virgin Atlantic has revealed its collaboration with Joby Aviation, an electric aircraft company, to launch an air taxi service in the United Kingdom, providing faster transportation for travelers after international flights.
The partnership was announced at the Farnborough Airshow, where Virgin Atlantic's clients will be able to book Joby's eVTOL flights via the company's website and app. With the partnership, there will be a seamless travel experience through linking airports to cities within minutes rather than hours.
Among the first routes that will be created, travelers will be able to fly from London Heathrow Airport to London City Airport in about eight minutes as opposed to the over an hour that it takes on the road. There are also plans for the air taxi service from Manchester Airport to Leeds in 15 minutes.
Based on Joby, passengers will be charged similar rates to those of Uber Black services, which makes Virgin Atlantic air taxi service a reasonable choice. The executives have mentioned that prices charged on the route of Heathrow will vary from $130 to $160 per passenger. Joby’s electric aircraft will be equipped with six tilting propellers, which will be capable of flying at a distance of 100 miles and will generate substantially lower noise when compared to other helicopters.
This collaboration is being undertaken by Joby considering the company’s prior collaboration with Delta Air Lines, which holds considerable shares in Virgin Atlantic. With further regulatory approval, the Civil Aviation Authority of the United Kingdom intends to certify commercial electric air taxi airport transfers for passengers by the end of 2028. Business Honor observes that Virgin Atlantic is positioning itself at the forefront of next-generation mobility, with air taxi technology offering faster airport connectivity and reshaping premium short-distance travel.
