India is poised for rapid eSIM adoption as regulatory reforms, IoT expansion, and connected vehicles accelerate secure digital connectivity across consumer and enterprise ecosystems.

India is entering a new era of eSIM technology, which will be driven by regulations, increased IoT connectivity in India, and the need for connected vehicle technology, according to Rahul Tandon, Senior Vice President (Connectivity Services) at IDEMIA Secure Transactions.
Tandon stated that it is at an important stage because of the 2025 recommendations made by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India for M2M eSIM deployment. The regulations have made way for more secure systems, allowing for remote SIM provisioning and even legal transfer of M2M SIMs.
The new regulations demand absolute compliance with the MTCTE guidelines as well as enhancing KYC procedures to ensure traceability when organizations send or receive M2M SIMs. As per Tandon, the above mentioned steps give telecom providers, as well as other stakeholders such as the device manufacturer and industrial partners, the assurance needed to roll out their eSIM initiatives.
IDEMIA Secure Transactions, a division of IDEMIA, partners with telecom service providers, automakers, equipment manufacturers, and devices to provide secure connectivity solutions for IoT and M2M applications.
Quoting GSMA Intelligence projections, Tandon said India is expected to reach 835 million eSIM smartphone connections by 2030, representing nearly 65% of all smartphone connections in the country. The technology is currently being used in premium and mid-range Android smartphones, iPhones, smartwatches, and connected vehicles capable of multimedia streaming, remote vehicle management, and digital services.
In India, the major telecom operators, such as Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, have extended eSIM services to improve customer experience and increase the security of their smartphones. The state-run operator BSNL has also joined the league in 2025, in collaboration with Tata Communications.
However, Tandon pointed out that although this might be the case, the process of adoption is still slow since consumers are not aware of eSIMs, while activation can pose some technical difficulties. Furthermore, he noted that the use of eSIM is more secure than that of physical SIM since it is based on GSMA encryption.
