South African Policeman Shadrack Sibiya Charged With Sexual Offences

South African policeman Shadrack Sibiya faces charges of rape, sexual assault and alleged sexual grooming, with his bail hearing set for September 29.

  • Shadrack Sibiya is facing multiple criminal charges

  • The allegations include rape and sexual grooming

  • The state is opposing bail

  • His next court appearance is scheduled for September 29

  • The case comes amid wider scrutiny of South Africa’s police service

One of South Africa’s top policemen, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, has been brought before the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on charges relating to alleged sexual misconduct. Sibiya, the 59-year-old former deputy national police commissioner who was suspended last week, was arrested earlier this week.

The South African policeman is accused of raping an 18-year-old woman and sexually grooming a 16-year-old girl. Sibiya is also charged with human trafficking.

He will appear before the court next on September 29 for a bail hearing. Prosecutors oppose bail because of concerns including witness interference and the possibility of escape. The government has requested that Sibiya be detained at Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre.

This issue has come up at a time when the South African police force is under investigation through the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into corruption in the South African police force.

The commission had previously investigated allegations involving Sibiya. In August, it recommended disciplinary measures as well as criminal investigations against Sibiya and other people, who could face criminal charges if there is sufficient evidence. Sibiya has denied one of the allegations against him, which claimed that he accepted impalas from Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who is accused of attempted murder.

The current court case is separate from those allegations. Sibiya is considered innocent until proven guilty.

The case involving senior South African police officials facing criminal charges is likely to receive further public attention. This comes as investigations into police corruption in South Africa continue through the Madlanga Commission.

Business Honor observes that the case against South African policeman Shadrack Sibiya adds further scrutiny to the country’s law-enforcement system as criminal proceedings and wider police investigations continue.
