Obsession's unprecedented box office collection momentum challenges traditional Indian film industry patterns and expectations significantly.

Obsession is breaking all conventional box office numbers by having a second Monday gross of over the second Friday gross (a normal average drop from Friday to Monday is 30-50%). Increasing its gross by 4% from Friday to Monday with Rs. 4.15 crore (US$435,000) Monday and has shown an incredible increase in gross of 70% from the previous Monday. Obsession's continued ability to attract such a strong audience base is unmatched in Indian cinema history.
After 11 days of being in theatres, Obsession has grossed roughly Rs. 46.75 crore (US$ 4.90 million), and due to the Discount Tuesday program, Obsession's total box office gross will likely exceed Rs. 50 crore today. Analysts believe the second week of Obsession's run will generate approximately Rs. 36 crore, bringing the total gross for Obsession by Thursday of its second week to about Rs.58 crore. Based on the current trajectory of the film, many industry analysts believe Obsession's total box office gross will be over Rs.80 crore, and most experts feel the total gross will exceed Rs.90 crore as well. However, the outstanding gross for Monday has suddenly made the goal of over Rs.100 crore even more realistic.
Even with the positive outlook regarding future Star Wars film releases, the start of the "Obsession” film in the industry has an uphill climb due to many other upcoming releases from both Hollywood (U.S.) as well as Bollywood (India) throughout the month of June; all of which could have an effect on its ability to continue performing well. History has shown that this time of year typically creates downward pressure on collections from after the third and fourth weeks of a movie's theatrical run. Experts in the Industry state that "Obsession" has far exceeded any early expectations. Its performance at the box office has surprised almost all of the analysts in the industry, and performance shows an uncommonly strong link between the film and audiences which goes much further than the traditional use of box office results. The film has shown an ability to maintain strong box office collections, regardless of the typical ups-and-downs of a marketplace or multiple competing movies being released at the same time, which demonstrates the caliber of the film itself and how well the movie is being received from the Indian population.
Two other major reasons why the performance of "Obsession" is even more extraordinary than most of the typical Indian releases that tend to have predictable patterns regarding their box office performance during the early weeks of their initial run period. The performance of “Obsession” has not followed these predictable patterns and, therefore, has shown that either word of mouth or the satisfaction of the audience, or both, is helping create strong repeat viewings and continued strong ticket sales. As the film navigates its third week and beyond, stakeholders will closely monitor whether it can maintain this momentum and ultimately achieve the Rs. 100 crore threshold. The coming weeks will prove definitive, but regardless of whether it reaches that specific milestone, Obsession has already established itself as an exceptional commercial success in the Indian film industry.
Business Honor is of the view that Obsession's exceptional Monday collections represent a transformative shift in audience engagement and sustained theatrical performance dynamics.
