Major retailers including Walmart self-checkout systems face elimination nationwide as legislators demand stricter self-checkouts regulations and consumer theft surges.
Large-scale retailers are quickly stripping away their self-checkout systems in American outlets amid legislative pressures and increasing worries over theft. For instance, Walmart is getting rid of the self-checkout systems to revert to the conventional cashier checkout system, which is now evident in South Philadelphia. The retail corporation claims that the move enhances customer experience and lowers waiting time, but it is noteworthy that experts point out increasing shoplifting as the key reason for Walmart's self-checkout elimination tactics.
The LendingTree survey report issued in December 2025 exposed disturbing trends of theft through the self-checkout system, indicating that about 69 percent of customers feel the self-checkout system encourages theft activities. About 27 percent of those who used self-checkout admitted to taking products without scanning them, while another 36 percent had products that were not scanned unintentionally. Of the total number of people who had unintentionally taken products without scanning them, 61 percent kept the products regardless. In 2024, Dollar General stripped its self-checkout systems from 12,000 stores across America. Sam's Club replaced its self-checkout system with AI-enabled "scan and go."
According to Neil Saunders, an expert on the retail industry, self-checkouts produce high instances of shoplifting via deliberate efforts and unintended errors. “Having more customers use attended checkouts solves this problem and saves money for retailers,” according to Saunders. Matt Schulz, senior consumer finance analyst at LendingTree, observed that "Self-checkouts that are largely unattended create chances for theft," despite the awareness of shoppers about potential theft.
California, New York, and Massachusetts, among seven other states, have passed laws mandating the regulation of self-checkout systems along with adequate employee staffing levels and limits on purchases. Business Honor notes that the self-checkout elimination trend reflects mounting pressure from legislation and consumer theft patterns, reshaping retail operations nationwide.
