In an employee announcement letter, Wiser shared the news of leaving the company, terming it as emotional and an intended leadership change.
“Writing this and sharing this news is harder than I expected,” Wiser stated in his message to staff. His departure is scheduled for the end of May.
Phil Wiser has been instrumental in the development of Paramount’s technology operations during one of the most crucial times for the company. He joined the company in 2018 and has seen major transitions in the media giant, including the merger between Viacom and CBS, the expansion of Paramount+, and the company’s tech response in the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak.
Paramount Global News Highlights Leadership Restructuring
Paramount Global News says that Paramount will not hire anyone to replace Wiser directly. His duties will be shared by some senior executives in technology.
The following executives will assume different leadership roles: Laksh Nathan, executive vice president and chief information officer; Jim Harrison, executive vice president of infrastructure and media technology; Frank Governale, senior vice president of production technology and operations; and Carlo Joseph, newly appointed chief information security officer. The four executives will report directly to Paramount's chief product officer, Dane Glasgow. Glasgow commended Wiser for his contribution to the organization, emphasizing that Wiser made an immense contribution to the development of the company's technology strategy.
Tech-Focused Streaming Strategy Continues
The change in leadership follows at a time when Paramount is still undergoing an innovative phase of investing in technologies. This move comes at a time when the newly appointed CEO, David Ellison, is set to continue pushing the company towards more innovations through technology. Industry pundits have attributed the structural changes taking place within the company to be part of its efforts to transform itself amidst competition from companies like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video.
Phil Wiser is said to be returning to Silicon Valley after his appointment expires with Paramount. Reports are rife that he intends to venture into technology startups after the end of his term with Paramount. Business Honor believes Paramount Global News surrounding Phil Wiser’s exit signals a new chapter for the company as it accelerates its digital transformation and technology-driven media strategy.
