Machine Learning Algorithms Extract Diagnostic Insights beyond Traditional Pathology Microscopy Analysis.
AI has revolutionized oncology by extracting diagnostic insights that human pathologists are unable to see using traditional microscopy. Valar Labs, a company located in Palo Alto, is currently developing machine-learning algorithms meant to analyze histopathological images at unprecedented levels and provide data-driven recommendations for oncologists and patients on how best to treat cancer. While pathologists diagnose tumors and determine whether they are aggressive through manual analysis of slides, their visual analysis has several limitations. In contrast, computer vision systems can find very small patterns and biomakers not visible to the human eye. This allows for a new way of accessing diagnostic information will radically change the way that we approach treating cancer.
The technology seeks to solve one of the biggest problems encountered by physicians: when there are no comparable treatments for patients with advanced cancer who qualify for multiple treatment regimens. Recently developed A.I.-assisted pathology analysis has the potential to eliminate or greatly reduce uncertainty regarding diagnosis. A.I.-assisted pathology enables more accurate clinical decisions because it provides objective, data-based recommendations according to each patient's individual tumor characteristics and clinical profiles.
The advancement in diagnostic accuracy associated with A.I.-assisted pathology does not only impact clinical decisions, but it also becomes a key component of the journey toward individualized medicine in oncology (i.e., physician prescribes treatment based on the totality of the molecular and morphological findings or biomarkers, rather than using standardized protocols). With earlier intervention and more precise therapies, patient outcomes could significantly improve and patients would have less exposure to treatments that are ineffective. Valar Labs uses deep learning technology to analyze large pathological datasets to identify patterns that correlate with treatment response and prognosis.
