IBM Invests in Anima's AI Platform to Revolutionize Software Design

IBM has made an important strategic investment in Anima, an Israeli startup, which is disrupting the way software is developed through artificial intelligence. The new investment shows that the landscape of developer tooling is changing rapidly and that AI will play an increasingly important role in connecting the design and engineering workflows.

Founded in 2017 and supported initially with funding from Y Combinator, Anima has created a revolutionary platform for converting digital designs into production-ready software code. Their platform sits at the intersection between designers creating application interfaces and engineers transforming those designs into functional software.

Anima's platform uses advanced artificial intelligence agents to automatically generate application interfaces based on the brand guidelines, design systems, and existing front-end code of a company. The platform has over 1.5 million users and counts major global customers such as Amazon, Samsung, Apple, Disney, Deloitte, and Accenture. Thus far, organizations that have implemented Anima's technology have experienced considerable improvements in efficiency, reducing project timelines by as much as 50% and reducing manual effort related to front-end coding by up to 80%.

The API-first nature of Anima's platform robustly integrates with the widely used Figma design tool to provide a more streamlined workflow between design and engineering teams. "The investment is part of a larger trend towards AI-enabled tools for developing digital products faster, and the importance of re-thinking design as a responsive, active process with data from the real world, rather than a static visual product, is also highlighted in the investment," said Emily Fontaine, IBM's head of global venture capital. In order to eliminate existing bottlenecks in the design-build cycle, Anima intends to provide teams with the ability to engage with coding assistance through artificial intelligence.
