A strong earthquake hit northern Japan, this caused injuries, power outages, and tsunami alerts.
A powerful earthquake struck northern Japan, leading to injuries, loss of power, and a temporary Japan tsunami warning. The earthquake in Japan occurred off the coast of Aomori Prefecture, with the Japan earthquake magnitude ranging from 7.5 to 7.6, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The focal point of the earthquake was about 80 kilometers offshore and 50 kilometers deep.
After the quake, the JMA issued tsunami alert, where waves up to three meters might affect coastal areas in Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate. Residents were instructed to evacuate quickly to higher ground or evacuation centers. Lately, only small waves of 20 to 70 cm were noticed. This resulted in Japan's tsunami alert level being reduced to warnings.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency stated that more than 20 people were hurt in Hokkaido, including one severe injury. Several other individuals were injured from fallen objects, including the residents in Hachinohe and a guy in Tohoku was slightly injured when his vehicle fell into a hole caused by the earthquake. An AFP journalist in Hokkaido reported about 30 seconds of severe shaking while emergency alarms rang.
Power cuts affected 800 to 2,700 residences, and several fires were reported. Around 480 citizens took shelter in the Hachinohe airbase, while about 200 travelers were forced to stay overnight at New Chitose Airport. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi advised residents to stay alert, stating that earthquakes could still occur. This incident has gained wide attention in Japan earthquake news.
