Over 5.08 lakh 5G BTS deployed; focus now shifts to network quality, enterprise.
A significant digital connectivity milestone has been achieved by India, as 5G connectivity is now available in 99.9% of all districts across all states and union territories, the government told Parliament. In a reply given to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister for Communications and Rural Development, Dr Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, said that over 5.08 lakh 5G BTS points have been installed by operators as of 31st Oct 2025.
The rollout is among the fastest in the country and worldwide, taking less than two and a half years from the initial trial phase of 5G. The rollout has also extended rapidly in major cities, as well as along district headquarters and into rural areas. As per the Ministry of Communications, the expansion has been fueled by the initiatives launched by the government, including BharatNet, the 4G Saturation plan, and projects for areas affected by Left Wing Extremism and Aspirational Districts. Smoother Right of Way clearances through the GatiShakti Sanchar portal and shared telecom sites have also contributed greatly.
“India’s entire telecom network continues to expand in size,” said the government, adding that “the total number of BTS installed across various technologies from 2G to 5G has now crossed 31 lakh.” Initiatives like giving time-bound approval for setting up telecom equipment on street furniture like lamp posts and bus shelters have also improved coverage in urban areas.
Now, with the objective of universal availability of 5G networks having been met, the next level of the digital evolution of India will include network performance, enterprise solutions, and rural digital services. According to officials, improving the fiber backbone, reliability in dense areas, and supporting next-generation apps will top the agenda as India's 5G matures in the year 2026.
