Fintech giant launches ₦1.2 billion decade-long programme to promote education and youth empowerment.

In one of the most interesting examples of corporate social responsibility, leading financial technology company OPay has given ₦126 million in scholarships to 420 students across 20 tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The move marked the first phase of OPay's ambitious ₦1.2 billion Empowering Futures Scholarship Programme, a ten-year commitment to advancing education, youth empowerment, and social development.

Announced at the Empowering Futures Conference 2025, in Lagos, scholarship launch brought together a host of stakeholders from academia, government, and the private sector to celebrate of OPay's growing impact on Nigeria's education landscape. The event also witnessed the signing of an MoU with the participating institutions, hence guaranteeing transparency and sustainability in the execution of the scholarship.

The programme, according to Elizabeth Wang, OPay’s Chief Operating Officer, reflects the company’s belief in the view that “education is the bedrock of national development.” Wang said OPay was committed to inclusive growth, announcing that it would set up Cyber Labs and offer graduate employment opportunities for Nigerian youth as part of its wider CSR plan.

The gesture ensured that each of the 420 beneficiaries got ₦300,000 to help reduce their financial burden and further pursue academic excellence. For the next decade, OPay will be sponsoring 400 students every year, contributing ₦120 million annually toward the growth of deserving scholars across universities and polytechnics in the country. The Vice-Chancellors of partner institutions, including the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and Olabisi Onabanjo University, commended OPay for its genuine commitment to education and national development.
