Ferrari’s tough season turns Hamilton’s debut year into a nightmare filled with mistakes, retirement and fading confidence
Lewis Hamilton has described his maiden season at Ferrari as a "nightmare" after enduring another difficult weekend, retiring from the São Paulo Grand Prix at the visit in a year in which he has felt largely annoyed and let-down as he adjusts to the new automobile team. "It's a nightmare" Hamilton said. "I have been living it for a while. The flip between the dream of driving for this amazing team and the nightmare of the results that we have had. We just really have to manage those results at the moment.”
In a race won by Lando Norris which extended his world championship to 24 points with his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, Hamilton struggled to make any significant inroads once again. He qualified in 13th and after being clipped by Carlos Sainz early in the race, he got floor damage after misjudging a pass on Franco Colapinto shortly afterwards. He retired the car on lap 37 to mark another disappointing result in a season where he sits sixth in the title race, 66 points behind his teammate Charles Leclerc, and still without a leadership.
"I am very conscious about others' viewpoints and how I am presented as well as things are in the media, and I cared too much maybe earlier this year, and it was impacting me in not the healthiest ways. I have learned how to manage those things a lot better." Norris triumphed at Interlagos with a stunning performance from the front, but immediately after the event took a swipe at those who had questioned previously his ability to battle for a title. “Just ignore anyone that talks crap about you, and just concentrate on yourself,” he said of his mindset since he came from behind to regain the lead in the points.
