A new milestone in women's cricket is set during the inaugural match of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup in Guwahati.
India and Sri Lanka played a historic first match in Guwahati to kick off the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025. This is the first game that broke the previous record for the most people attending a Women's Cricket World Cup opening day. 22,843 spectators at the ACA Stadium broke the previous attendance record of 15,935 at the 2024 India and Pakistan ICC Women's T20 World Cup. This record is only one of many milestones to be achieved throughout the event, including with the largest prize money in women's cricket history and improved fan access. These changes show how the sport is growing and gaining international recognition.
Sachin Tendulkar admired the progress made in women's cricket in an essay for the ICC. He admits that the Women's Premier League (WPL) has altered the rules by providing players with a platform, media attention, and financial support that they did not have before. Tendulkar also recognized Jay Shah, the secretary of the BCCI, for his support of equal match payments for men and women and for his role in the creation of the WPL. He also stated that these changes effectively communicate to young women that their love of cricket is just important.
Tendulkar also congratulated the ICC for giving the competition record prize money, which was more than the 2023 men's World Cup offered. This sends a powerful message that women's cricket is worthy of both respect and adoration, he said. The 13th edition of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup has eight teams competing for the desired championship.
