New regulatory framework supports independent freight trials to increase efficiency and sustainability.
Dubai is set to change its logistics sector by introducing self-driving trucks on five major routes in marking a significant step towards the future freight transport. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has developed a detailed regulatory framework aimed at assisting the safe deployment of independent heavy vehicles, focusing on improving operational efficiency, sustainability, and safety within the logistics network.
The plan will roll out in two phases. The first phase established essential safety, licensing, and operational standards for autonomous trucks, developed in teamwork with private companies, logistics operators, and retailers. This groundwork safeguards that the developing technology aligns with Dubai’s broader goals of technological leadership and economic growth.
In the second phase, driverless trucks will begin trials on five critical logistics routes. The routes are namely, Jebel Ali Port, Al Maktoum International Airport, Jebel Ali Port Rail Freight Station, Dubai Investment Park, and Ibn Battuta Mall. These locations were chosen for their planned importance in Dubai’s supply chain, allowing smooth testing of independent freight vehicles in everyday conditions. Some routes will have safety drivers overseeing operations, while others will operate fully separately to steadiness invention with caution.
With more than 61,000 heavy vehicles currently operating in Dubai’s land logistics sector, the regulatory framework is designed to assimilate the existing fleet while paving the way for upcoming computerization. By 2030, this initiative is aimed in helping Dubai's Economic Agenda by increasing logistical efficiency, lowering carbon emissions by 30%, and increasing technology utilization by 75%.
