Suriname beats El Salvador 2-1 in World Cup qualifier, ending decades-long losing streak.
In a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match, Suriname surprised everyone by defeating El Salvador 2-1 on Monday. It was the first time Suriname had succeeded over the Central American team since 1968. In the CONCACAF qualifying final round the game was a member of Group A. Dhoraso Klas' late goal in the 81st minute gave Suriname the thrilling victory with a smart move. With this victory, Suriname now has four points more than El Salvador who is still on three.
Suriname took the lead in the twelfth minute of play. Radinio Balker, a defender for Huddersfield Town in England, scored with a strong header. After a video review, El Salvador believed Brayan Gil had equalized in the 29th minute but the goal was disallowed. Finally, in the 73rd minute, Suriname defender Anfernee Dijksteel's own goal gave El Salvador the equalizer. Eight minutes later, though Klas answered with an incredible right-footed shot that gave Suriname the victory.
The other group match was a 1-1 tie between Guatemala and Panama. Oscar Santis gave Guatemala the lead in the 35th minute, but Carlos Harvey of Panama quickly tied the score two minutes later. Because Mexico, the United States and Canada are automatically qualified to co-host the 2026 World Cup, this qualifying round is unique. Only the group winners advance straight to the tournament, with the remaining 12 CONCACAF teams divided into three groups of four. In addition to improving their chances Suriname's victory ended an eight-match losing streak against El Salvador. They had only defeated the Salvadorans twice before the first being more than fifty years ago.
