State tackles black marketing, supports organic farming, and boosts horticulture for farmers’ benefit.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has assured farmers that the state possesses adequate stocks of fertilizer to satisfy the demand for the season. During a recent review meeting, he assured that the state's fertilizer inventories are above the actual requirements, guaranteeing an uninterrupted supply with no interruptions. To check the black marketing of urea, the Chief Minister has directed stringent measures to avoid artificial shortages and ensure farmers’ uninterrupted access to basic fertilizers. The government is also moving towards encouraging organic farming. Chief Minister Naidu instructed authorities to educate farmers on the ill effects of excessive pesticide and fertilizer use. Under this initiative, the government will provide incentives to farmers who transition to natural and low-input farming systems, thereby reducing chemical use.
In a bid to monitor fertilizer use better, the government will be depending on the Rythu Seva Kendras (farmers' service centers), which will keep track of and document the use of fertilizers at the farmer level. This information will ensure efficient utilization of fertilizers and not misuse. The fertilizer inventory of the state is well in excess of requirements for the season. For example, supplies of urea have already crossed 2.02 lakh metric tonnes, an increase of 91,000 metric tonnes over last year. DAP and complex fertilizers have also been delivered in higher quantities, making available the correct inputs to farmers for their crops.
Furthermore, the state is concentrating on the horticulture industry with price support to 11 major crops to cover cultivation expenses. The government is also working towards resolving problems such as pest attacks on crops and providing compensation to farmers who are affected. Through these efforts, Andhra Pradesh is going a long way in achieving balance in fertilizer consumption, sustainable agriculture, and general growth of the agricultural environment in the state.
