Vietnam focuses on smart urban development to drive digital economy, sustainability, and efficient growth.
At a recent conference in Hà Nội, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyễn Chí Dùng emphasized the central position of smart urban development in driving Vietnam's digital and urban economy. Smart development has not only become a choice, but a mandatory trend for those countries that desire to drive sustainable growth, upgrade the quality of life, and improve urban administration, he said. The Deputy PM highlighted that with proper planning and digitalization, the smart city had the potential to become a significant driver of economic growth, spurring the digital economy and driving urban activities. He also pointed to the significance of the establishment of the inter-agency task force, which will be a central entity to oversee smart city initiatives, address problems, and facilitate pilot projects in six priority cities.
The task force is responsible for ensuring that smart city projects are in line with a detailed roadmap, as well as coordinating the development of associated policies. The Ministry of Construction is spearheading the effort, with an emphasis on preparing a decree to expedite the implementation process, which is set to be submitted to the Government by August 15. The session also considered the implementation of Project 950, Vietnam's sustainable smart urban development strategy for 2018–2025, and its vision for 2030. The delegates demanded a clear investment plan to prevent inefficiencies and make sure that the resources are appropriately utilized. The Deputy PM also emphasized the necessity of better public-private partnerships to further the growth of smart cities.
In proceeding with this, the government plans to promote domestic production of smart city technology, lower dependency on imports, and implement digital transformation in pilot communes and wards. These plans are likely to help develop a more integrated, sustainable urban future for Vietnam.
