Saipem to lead Algeria's first integrated phosphate mining and fertilizer plant project.
Italian construction and engineering company Saipem has secured a significant Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract from Sonatrach, the state-owned Algerian energy company. The project is for the production of an integrated phosphate mining and fertilizer plant in Algeria. This is a milestone in the development of the country's economy as it moves to diversify and boost its role in the international fertilizer market.
The project, known as the Phosphate Integrated Project, will involve the development of a new industrial complex in Algeria. The complex will have phosphate mining facilities in the Bled El Hadba region and fertilizer manufacturing units in Oued Keberit. Aside from the main mining and production units, the project will also have port upgrades for the Annaba port and the development of railroad connections between the production and extraction sites.
Upon completion, the project will produce over 10 million tonnes of phosphate annually and 6 million tonnes of fertilizers every year. This is the first such project in Algeria, and it integrates both mine production and fertilizer manufacturing into one combined operation. The project is likely to contribute to economic growth in Algeria and enhance the country's reputation in the international world of fertilizers.
Saipem's FEED award is the precursor to the direct award of the EPC contract, pending the ultimate selection of design. Saipem, which has had operations in Algeria since 1968, will be at the forefront of this major project, consistent with its strategic objective of seeking sustainable industrial growth and development of the fertilizer business.
