Houthis attack Greek ship; crew rescued, ship possibly sunk near Yemen in Red Sea.
Following a significant strike in the Red Sea, Houthi terrorists in Yemen claim to have sunk the Magic Seas, a cargo ship owned by Greece. The gang claims that it launched a concerted attack using drones, missiles, and explosive boats, which caused the ship to sink less than twenty-four hours later. Although the Houthis claim to have audio and video evidence, there hasn't been any independent confirmation that the Magic Seas has sunk as of yet. They have previously made similar assertions that were later shown to be untrue. Allseas Marine, which is the ship's Greek handler, has not yet responded.
Built in 2016, the 63,000-deadweight-ton vessel was en route to the Suez Canal following stops in Singapore and China. The crew fled the ship into a lifeboat, and the EU's Operation Atalanta stated that it assisted in their rescue. All 22 sailors, including Filipino, Vietnamese and Romanian nationals, were picked up by a merchant ship and taken to Djibouti in safety.
The Magic Seas reportedly came under fire 51 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen. Despite being attacked with firearms, grenades and drones, the armed guards on board claimed to have destroyed two drone boats. Before the crew left, a fire started and the ship started to absorb water. Yahya Saree, a Houthi spokeswoman, said the maritime company had previously transported vessels to Israel and stated the strike was retaliatory. He added that the crew was given warnings and given permission to leave. In 2025, this is the first attack on a commercial ship. Global shipping companies continue to exercise caution as tensions increase. As regional patrols continue, naval authorities are asking all vessels in the region to register for protection.
