New shore power system reduces pollution, improves efficiency at Tacoma’s Husky Terminal port.
The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) has completed a major upgrade at Husky Terminal in Tacoma by installing shore power, a system that lets ships plug into local electricity while docked instead of running their diesel engines. The container ship Kuala Lumpur Express, operated by Hapag-Lloyd, was the first vessel to use this new system.
By lowering emissions from ships as they load or unload cargo, shore power helps improve the air quality and minimize pollution at busy ports. This move aligns with NWSA's Clean Ports Clean Air Strategy, which seeks to have all international ports shore power ready by 2030 and eliminate maritime emissions by 2050.
Husky Terminal is now the second international cargo terminal in Washington State with this green technology following Terminal 5’s shore power system completed last year. Other terminals that is including Terminal 18 in Seattle and Washington United Terminal in Tacoma are next in line for shore power installations.
Partnerships with local workers, shipping firms, port operators and more than $3 million in federal and state awards enabled this effort. These improvements prove the NWSA's dedication to improving port operations while preserving the environment.
Since more than half of the ships that stop at the port can now connect to shore power NWSA is establishing the benchmark for more efficient and environmentally friendly marine logistics. This change will assist the region's supply chain manage freight more responsibly and efficiently which benefits the environment as well.
