E-commerce platforms sell protest-themed items ahead of nationwide "No Kings" demonstrations.
As scheduled nationwide protests against the Trump administration approach, a trend of "No Kings" products is emerging on popular online shopping platforms such as Amazon, Temu, Etsy, and Walmart. The products, ranging from t-shirts to hats, posters, and signs, are making waves because they are tied to the upcoming protests scheduled for Saturday.
On Temu, a China-based company, a U.S.-based seller is selling a t-shirt for only $5.20. The t-shirt boasts the slogan "No Kings in America," the Statue of Liberty, and the American flag. Amazon, one of the largest e-commerce giants, returns more than 1,000 results when you search for "No Kings." These products are typically printed on demand, so they're printed and shipped only after an order is received, to keep unsold stock away.
Etsy has also experienced an increase in related products like posters and yard signs, while Walmart, even though it distanced itself from an advertisement in support of the protests, also has fewer related items available on its website.
The "No Kings" protest group will coincide with a large military parade in Washington, D.C., honoring the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army. The website of the movement states strongly against the government, "In America, we don't do kings." They state that the message is against the actions of the government, e.g., claimed corruption and civil rights assaults, and demands an end to what they view as increasing authoritarianism.
This quick production of protest-related merchandise is typical in e-commerce since vendors usually move fast to take advantage of trending issues. Other quick-producing products like these were available following top-trending events, including political rallies and tragedies.
As "No Kings" protests gained traction, the sale of related items illustrated the way that e-commerce websites are becoming the focal point for spreading political and social movements.
