Juniper, Turkcell, and ID Quantique collaborate on a quantum-safe encryption solution for mobile networks.
Juniper Networks has announced a successful partnership with Turkey's top telecommunications and technology provider, Turkcell, and ID Quantique to confirm an innovative proof-of-concept (PoC) aimed at protecting mobile networks against the future threats of quantum attacks. This PoC combines Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) with Juniper's market-leading MACsec and IPsec encryption solutions to deliver a quantum-strong infrastructure that protects essential mobile backhaul components such as Precision Timing Protocols (PTP) and encrypted data.
The joint solution meets the urgent need for extremely secure encryption solutions as quantum computing emerges, especially in 5G backhaul networks that are sensitive to time. Conventional encryption solutions such as MACsec provide exceptional quantum resistance using pre-shared keys but are not highly scalable for mass deployment because they do not support automatic key distribution. By embedding QKD technology, Juniper's solutions provide an effortless, scalable method for securing mobile networks without adding latency that will degrade service.
Turkcell tested this solution with Juniper's SRX Series Firewalls and ACX Series Routers, first with a virtual key management system (KMS) and then with ID Quantique's Clavis XG and Clarion KX to generate keys using quantum. The PoC was shown to be able to preserve 5G timing accuracy and IP traffic integrity, even while using quantum-secure key exchange.
Juniper Networks' SVP and CTO Raj Yavatkar said, "This is an important milestone in the development of quantum-safe security for the telecommunications industry. QKD integration with our MACsec and IPsec technologies is a success, setting new standards for secure communication and demonstrating Juniper's leadership in preparing networks for a quantum-resistant future." With this partnership, Juniper Networks is further committing to the innovation of next-generation encryption technology that protects against future cybersecurity threats and ensures a quantum-safe future for the world's telecommunication infrastructure.
